Marketing Your Cottage Food Business
Build your brand, attract repeat customers, and grow sales through farmers markets, social media, and word-of-mouth strategies.
Marketing on a Cottage Food Budget
You do not need a huge marketing budget to build a successful cottage food business. The most effective marketing channels for cottage food are either free or very low cost: farmers markets, social media, email, and word of mouth. The key is consistency and authenticity.
Farmers Market Success Strategies
Farmers markets are the primary sales channel for most cottage food producers. Standing out requires more than just great products:
Booth Setup
- Tablecloth and signage: A clean, branded tablecloth and a visible sign with your business name costs under $50 and makes a huge difference. Use a vertical banner or A-frame sign that is readable from 10+ feet away.
- Height variation: Use wooden crates, cake stands, or tiered displays to create visual interest. Flat tables look bland and do not draw the eye.
- Samples: If your state law and market rules allow sampling, this is the single most effective sales tactic. People who taste your product are 5-10x more likely to buy. Use small portions — a quarter cookie or a tiny spoonful of jam on a cracker.
- Price signs: Clearly display prices for every product. Customers who have to ask the price feel awkward and often walk away.
Customer Interaction
- Stand in front of your table, not behind it. This removes the physical barrier between you and the customer.
- Make eye contact and smile. A simple "Good morning! Would you like to try a sample?" is enough.
- Tell your story. Customers at farmers markets buy from people, not companies. Share why you started baking, where your recipe comes from, or what makes your ingredients special.
